@ Amanda. You’re going to love Japan, trust me.
@ Loco. You’ve been teaching as an ALT for quite some time. When you first started teaching, what was the biggest challenge/problem for you? How did you deal with it?

I know this question has been asked by people interested in Japan before, but I would appreciate more information on how to travel to and explore the west–i.e. the Sea of Japan, and its many islands.

Thanks Adam. Do you mean the Inland Sea of Japan (ie: Seto Nai Kai) or the Sea of Japan? I live in the Seto Nai Kai.

      • Adam

Yes, in fact I DID mean the Inland Sea of Japan: Seto Nai Kai

Thanks for the clarification…for this (at times) geographically challenged soul!

A question for Amy: Do we just accept that there are some corners of Japan that cannot be saved from the shrinking population / number of tourists, etc?

I hope this question will make sense.

Thanks for the question. Is this in reference to a specific article Amy has written? We’ll be sure to ask her on the show.

Great question Kyushudan, I’ll try to address it!

Hi, Amy. Do you think that Japan has/will become more friendly to foreign tourists? I’m thinking specifically of 旅館 or 民宿.

A loaded question! I’ll take a punt though.

  • Barun

Question for Amy Chavez. Tell me just ONE reason why the Japanese are the most polite folks in the world?

    • http://twitter.com/JapanLite Amy Chavez

      No :)

Question for Amy Chavez: What’s a recent culture shock or reverse culture shock you’ve had? After so many years of living on a small island in Okayama and traveling in and out of the country, you must have some great reactions of late, do tell…

  • Tim Fleet

I get the impression that there numerous ways to be disrespectful and perhaps even insulting to the Japanese, either as a guest in their homes, as a host to them in your home, or simply as a casual acquaintance or a stranger in a neutral setting. Americans are essentially clueless about these customs, and we tend to be brash, to put it mildly.

I would be interested in Amy’s insight as to how the Japanese typically respond to such transgressions. Are they generally forgiving? Do they find humor in our ignorance? Or are they deeply irritated, and just do not display it? – Thanks, Tim Fleet, Minnesota/Ohio, USA

Ok, thanks Tim, I’ll try to answer this.

  • ShellyItoh

Although I know the answer for myself, I would like to know what Amy thinks about what makes Shiraishi such a magical place compared to the more exotic get a ways located so close by in the South Pacific. What makes people from all over Japan and the world trek to this little island in the middle of the Seto Inland Sea?
